My next tasting!

Good Evening,

So I have another wine from my local wine store "Define Food and Wine".

And here goes...

The wine is from South Africa, the wine maker is Eagle's Cliff. Year 2007 and the grape is one of my favourite south African varieties... Pinotage.

Price £5

If you have drank pinotage before you will recognise the distinct aroma as I did immediately. Intense black and red fruit aromas. Strawberries and maybe blackberries.... Slightly spicy with hints of dark chocolate very subtle tanning's and a long finish.... very warming and very drinkable.

For this price I think this wine is excellent, the label itself looks a little off putting it screams of mass production and lack of forethought, however the wine delivers and is a delight in its dark appearance and Delicious taste and inspiring aromas. I would recommend any south African fans to give this a try.

Tomorrow we have a french red.... until then thanks for reading.

First wine tasting blog

So I should probably start with where the wine came from and where purchased? I will tell you and then supply a link just in case my details are inaccurate.

Country is Austria
The estate I believe is Weingut Brundlmayer
The grape is Gelber Muskateller (maybe?)

And here is the Link

Purchased from DeFine Food & Wine http://www.definefoodandwine.com

price £15

So on with the tasting...

I will start with appearance, very pale straw like tinge to its colour which I believe is due to the age (2002)

Aromas....

First i get flowers, honey and then white pepper lingers in the background... Very fresh and vibrant smells.

Taste....

This wine is listed on the estates site as being a desert wine but I really don't think its that sweet?

As I'm new to this I struggle to find words to match what I'm tasting but here goes...

Slightly sweet, there's that taste of the pepper that you smell which seems to stay with you right to the end and a slight tang like from the zest of an orange. I find the sweetness of the wine coupled with that tangy zest extremely refreshing and moreish. The tastes are faint but delightful and definitely there... if you cant find them my advice is to keep searching, that's what I did. :)

I drank this wine on its own but can imagine it tasting great with a cream cheese/spicy salad/seafood dish.

So that's it my first wine tasting notes ever, I hope I did the wine justice and no doubt I got some things wrong... one thing is for sure though this wine was extremely delightful and I would recommend it and buy it again.

Thanks for reading,

Gareth

My first blog!

This blog I feel is long overdue, for a few years now I have had a keen interest in food and wine indulging in both of these luxuries as often as possible... responsibly of course :)

In terms of food I have been more reading and cooking myself as apposed to eating out (there's a recession on you know...) Wine however I have been drinking but I only really got the spark for it again over the Christmas period after a short break in a bleak winter...

Background:

I have no formal education in food or wine so anyone with half an ounce of experience will probably read my nonsense and laugh; however, I do have taste buds and I am prepared to attempt to put my tastes into words and who knows with time I may start to make some sense!

So here goes and hopefully many more to come and someone will read and enjoy my less than educated ramblings.

Thanks for reading,

Gareth
